SHIELDS: RANKIN WON’T STOP MY PATH, I WAS GIFTED TO BE A BOXER

SHIELDS: RANKIN WON’T STOP MY PATH TO UNDISPUTED

T-Rex’ sets her sights on unifying the Middleweight division in 2019

Claressa Shields is aiming for a punishing win over Hannah Rankin at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane KS, on Saturday night, live on DAZN – to continue her destructive path to being the undisputed World Middleweight champion.

Tickets are on sale now from ticketmaster.com starting at just $25! Click here to book!

Shields defends her WBA and IBF crowns against Rankin with the vacant WBC strap also up for grabs. The WBC crown was in the hands of Christina Hammer, whom Shields was slated to meet this weekend in a unification blockbuster for all four belts, with the German also owning the WBO belt.

Shields has brushed off the disappointment of not facing Hammer and the two-time Olympic Gold medalist has itchy knuckles in preparing to meet the Scot Rankin, who is in her second World title fight – with DAZN showcasing a third Women’s World title bout in it’s third US show following Lightweight World title wins for Jessica McCaskill in Chicago and Katie Taylor in Boston in October.

“I’m thrilled to be able to continue my road to undisputed this weekend,” said Shields. “Christina has first in line when I win the belt on Saturday, it’s not a fight that we are looking to avoid. If she’d been fit to face me then that would be the fight this weekend. I wanted that fight bad.

“I felt that when we did the phone interview and we announced that we were fighting, I sensed in her tone that something was wrong, that she wasn’t as excited as I was about the fight. She didn’t seem happy, and as a champion I sensed something was wrong and I was right as she was sick. As soon as she comes back, we can fight.

“Hannah has been Christina’s toughest sparring partner so I am going to make her pay just for that. It’s not a let down for me, just getting in the ring and being able to fight is a joy to me, it makes me happy. Hannah has turned down another fight to take this shot and we’re fighting as a co-main event on DAZN, so it should be fun.”

Shields is not content with dominance at 160lbs – and the Michigan ace can see a return to Super-Middleweight where Alicia Napoleon, who defeated Rankin in August to defend her WBA belt at 168lbs, is a target along with the other champions.

‘T-Rex’ is also open to dropping to Super-Welterweight and inviting Welterweight ruler Cecilia Braekhus to move up in a bout to crown the pound-for-pound number one in Women’s boxing.

“None of the girls at 168lbs want to fight me,” said Shields. “We’ve offered the fight to Alicia many times and fights to so many of them, they’ve all said I’m too big and they are too little, then they say we don’t offer good money – but we have TV and we’re offering good money for sure.

“Alicia just wants to stay unbeaten and protected, I can’t even name any other fighters that she’s fought other than Hannah as I wouldn’t be approved by the commission to fight some of those girls.

“I think I can go as low as 154lbs and I would do that to fight Cecilia for the pound-for-pound spot. I don’t want to go to 147lbs as I would only be able to win the fight and not go on to defend the belts. She can keep her belts, I just want the pound-for-pound spot – she can have the belts and be number two, I’m number one. We can meet at 154lbs, that would be huge.”

Shields’ clash with Rankin is part of a huge night of action in Kansas in association with KO Night Boxing with a host of stars and local talents in

action.

Brooklyn’s Heavyweight star Jarrell Miller meets fellow unbeaten big-hitter Bogdan Dinu in a crunch clash at the top level of the division.

Middleweight contenders Luis Arias and Gabriel Rosado clash in what promises to be a real war as the pair look to gatecrash the lucrative top table, and there’s an all-Mexican clash and a homecoming for Brandon Rios against Ramon Alvarez, brother of ‘Canelo’’, as both men look to make a splash at Welterweight.

Team USA 2016 Olympic bronze medal man Nico Hernandez has raced to 5-0 (4KOs) – the Wichita talent fights for the third time in the Kansas Star Casino and Arena since debuting there in March 2017, unbeaten Wichita Super-Middleweight and police officer Manny Thompson looks to improve his 7-0 record and Las Vegas’ Jeremy Nichols meets Wichita’s Jeremiah Page at Middleweight.

Unbeaten Light-Heavyweight contender Anthony Sims Jr. and Brooklyn’s exciting newcomer to the Middleweight scene Nikita Ababiy, fresh from a first round KO on debut in Chicago earlier in the month are also in action.

SHEAR CLASS: ALAN SHEARER EXCLUSIVE WITH LEWIS RITSON

Alan Shearer is backing Lewis Ritson to go all the way to the top – and the Newcastle United legend hopes the Lightweight sensation follows his path and packs St. James’ Park for a big fight night.

A star-struck Toon Army mad Ritson met the number nine idol in the build up to his European title clash with Francesco Patera on Saturday night (October 13) and the ‘Sandman’ has sold the Metro Radio Arena out after packing it to the rafters for the first time in June when he destroyed Paul Hyland Jr in a round to win the British title outright.

‘The Sandman’ won the British Lightweight title outright by defeating the previously unbeaten challenger Paul Hyland Jr at the Metro Radio Arena in June and is predicting another destructive performance against Patera.

Gallowgate favourite Shearer knows all about the fanatical support in Newcastle after banging in 206 goals in ten seasons for his boyhood club, and he believes that the fans will soon be roaring him to World title honours on the hallowed turf.

“This will be my first ever fight that I’m attending so there’s no pressure for Lewis!” said Shearer.

“The fans are incredible up in Newcastle. If he keeps on winning then a fight a St James’ Park could happen as Lewis dreams of.

“That buzz when you walk out at St. James’ is special. I never really used to hear the singing on the pitch during the game, when you walked out the atmosphere was loud and that’s when I used to soak it all in but when that whistle went it was game time and I was zoned in.

“I used to stand on the terraces as a fan so to walk out and score in front of your own people is that bit more special. That’s the same for Lewis, but he’s knocking people out!

“It’s been interesting to speak with Lewis and understand how much preparation goes in from his training team to study opponents. When I was playing I knew the strengths and weaknesses of the centre backs and map out in advance how I want the service.”

Shearer and Ritson have a common thread having both played for famed kids’ team Wallsend Boys as kids, and the hitman-turned-pundit thinks the club has played a part in his success – and along with his close bond with his trainer father, could help him stay at the top when he’s there.

“When I was a young boy playing at Wallsend Boys club it taught me a lot. Lewis played there as well and some of that discipline will have no doubt rubbed off on to his game.

“Having his Dad standing there in the corner for each fight must be a proud feeling for the both of them.

“What I would say to Lewis is the easy part is getting to the top, but the hard part is staying there. He’ll have the money, house, holidays and car. The opponents will know more about him and the level is only going to get tougher. It’s not easy and he’ll have to probably come through some tricky moments but he’s got a great team around him.

“I’ll be there ringside and will be the first one to lead the songs when the Blaydon Races comes on.”

Ritson vs. Patera tops a huge night of action in Newcastle as rising Light-Heavyweight star Joshua Buatsi makes the first defence of his WBA International belt against Frenchman Tony Averlant, Liverpool’s Robbie Davies Jnr faces Sunderland’s Glenn Foot for the British and Commonwealth Super-Lightweight titles, Doncaster Heavyweight David Allen is gunning for another huge KO when he takes on Samir Nebo and Cruiserweights Simon Vallily and Craig Glover meet over ten rounds.

Ritson vs. Patera fight week media schedule:

Thursday October 11 – PRESS CONFERENCE – midday for a 12.30pm start – Civic Centre, Barras Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne NE99 1NP

Friday October 12 – WEIGH-IN – 1.00pm start – intu Metrocentre, Gateshead, NE11 9YG

VARGAS VS DULORME TO CLASH FOR WBC SILVER TITLE

Welterweights meet in Chicago on October 6 – clash with Porter targeted for the winner

Jessie Vargas and Thomas Dulorme will clash for the WBC Silver Welterweight title at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago on October 6, live on DAZN.

Former two-weight World ruler Vargas (28-2 10KOs) is gunning for the chance to become a two-time champion at 147lbs and victory over Dulorme (24-3 16KOs) would move him into pole position to face newly crowned WBC champion Shawn Porter as the mandatory challenger, after Porter defeated Danny Garcia in Brooklyn earlier in the month.

Las Vegas star Vargas headlines Matchroom Boxing USA’s first show in the States on DAZN and will have his hands full with the Puerto Rican – but with the stakes now raised even more, Vargas believes he can deliver a ‘tremendous’ victory and kickstart an exciting period in the peak of his career.

“My focus has to be solely on Thomas Dulorme,” said WBC #3 ranked Vargas. “This man is no walk in the park, he fights with his heart and always gives it his all, but I have prepared properly and record a tremendous victory. It’s going to be a great show and I’m proud to be headlining it.

“This is the first step in the new phase of my career. As a fighter, it’s always best to have fights lined up and have a clear plan, have a promoter that shows you ‘you are going to fight three times in 12 months’ and when you get that certainty you know you have a couple of weeks off after a fight and then you are into another training camp to give the fans another great. I am stull young and I have plenty of years left in me at the very top level – I’m truly excited.

“Shawn Porter is my boy and he’s a great fighter, he’s got a lot of experience, great stamina and power. I will fight the top guys, all the champions, there are some huge fights to make out there at Welterweight. We’re all going to go at it and we’re going to see who ends up on top.”

“Jessie is the leading contender in the WBC rankings and I am very confident that victory on October 6 will lead him to the mandatory position for Shawn Porter,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “That’s a great fight that we would be very interested in but first he must win the Mexico vs Puerto Rico battle in Chicago.”

Vargas and Dulorme clash on a huge night of action in Chicago, with two World title clashes and a huge fight for an American Heavyweight star.

Russian Artur Beterbiev defends his IBF World Light-Heavyweight title against fellow unbeaten puncher Callum Johnson, the Brit in his first World title fight.

Daniel Roman defends his WBA Super-Bantamweight crown against another Brit, second time World title challenger Gavin McDonnell, while Brooklyn’s brash Heavyweight star Jarrell Miller meets Polish legend Tomasz Adamek and three debutants grace the bill as Team USA talents Reshat Mati, Nikita Ababiy and Nkosi Solomon lace them up for the first time.

Along with these World stars and promising youngsters, Chicago fight fans will be able to back two of their own on the night, with former World Lightweight title challenger Jessica McCaskill in action on the bill along with unbeaten Bantamweight prospect Shawn Simpson.

Joshua V Wilder: The Saga Begins

It’s on, it’s off, it’s on again…!

Joshua V Wilder: The Saga Begins

Everything you need to know, minus everything you don’t, in the build up to the mega fight of the generation.

SO, WHAT’S GOING ON NOW?

At the moment of writing this article, the mouth-watering match-up between England’s Anthony Joshua and America’s Deontay Wilder is looking decidedly shaky. At least for this year.

WHAT ARE THE PRESS SAYING?

If you’ve been living under a rock (a rock with no WiFi), they’re basically making a lot of noise. Click bait mainly. Look up some longer interviews with each of the main players to get the real story.

I HAVEN’T GOT TIME, WHAT ARE THEY SAYING?

ANTHONY JOSHUA:

Absolutely nothing. Is that a display of his cowardice? Absolutely not. His class? Yeah, maybe. Or perhaps his cunning? More likely. He defers to promoter Eddie Hearn for the verbals.

EDDIE HEARN:

A lot. He’s accusing Deontay Wilder of avoiding signing the contract. Not because he’s thinks Wilder is scared (that wouldn’t help Hearn to sell Wilder as a mega opponent down the line) but because he reckons Wilder’s team are delaying for business reasons.

DEONTAY WILDER:

Essentially that he’s ready to fight Joshua anywhere, so long as the price is right. Love him or hate him, Wilder is doing his own talking. He’s not a man accustomed to utilising a million-dollar education or an accounting degree or a team of marketing & legal experts to do his talking for him (although he certainly seems wise enough & wealthy enough to attain all three). So in the war of words, he’s left fighting his own corner against the much more experienced and slippery Eddie Hearn. Yes, a lot of it could be hooey & hype, but if you avoid the cut-down Instagram videos, Tweets & click-baity headlines that social media are punting out, you’ll see he comes across fairly straight and honest once he’s got going.

SO WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON THEN?

What seems to be happening, depending on your stance and your level of cynicism, is the following…

Joshua is ready to fight Wilder. Wilder is ready to fight Joshua. But promoter Eddie Hearn has realised that if Joshua takes a tune up first, they can all make a lot more money. And, perhaps more importantly, the fighters won’t risk their clean records against each other, before it’s absolutely necessary to do so.

Joshua & Wilder, each having knocked out all of their opponents-bar-one, are each other’s worst nightmare in terms of risk – a loss could damage their respective careers and their ticket sales forever.

Hearn has not, of course, actually stated that he’s holding his fighter (AJ) back, but he has been accused of low-balling Wilder when sending out the contract and he did seem very quick to talk about moving on when Wilder’s team questioned the details.

In short, for the money men and potentially for the fans too – much like the teenage romance story this is turning into – the longer it builds up, the more attractive it becomes.

But that plan comes with a caveat. A shelf life. Deontay Wilder is now 32. In two years time he will be 34. And then people will start to call him over the hill. He won’t be, but people will say it. And at that point, we have another Lewis-Tyson scenario, another Calzaghe-Hopkins, another Mayweather-Pacquiao. Ahh, they will sigh… but he never faced him at his peak!

SO WHAT IF JOSHUA WILDER DOESN’T HAPPEN THIS YEAR?

It’s certainly possible. Perhaps even likely. Afterall, the WBA have ordered Joshua (who holds their belt) to fight mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin this year, and if that happens, Wilder will be left looking for a name for his own tune-up.

Fight Scene predicts that this will be against another British heavyweight.

Once the Matchroom engine revs up and roars into action, Hearn will likely take advantage of Deontay’s situation by pushing a big-name-Brit under the Wilder bus, to test the potential ticket sales for a UK fighter in the states.

They will then announce a new Joshua-Wilder date next April.

SO WHO SHOULD WIN, REALLY?

Joshua should. Really. (Note to reader: yes, I said that about David Haye last time out, let it go…)

Anthony Joshua is the complete package. Too big and too strong with a decent set of boxing skills. He’s also at the sweet spot in his career where he’s still young, fresh and hungry, but has the recent experience of beating a string of champions.

But let’s take a look at the other side for a moment…

It could be said by doubters that Joshua has only faced one real name – Wladimir Klitschko – a man already beaten by another British heavyweight with questions marks against his career, Tyson Fury.

And even Wlad, who was not known for explosive power even at his peak, managed to knock AJ down. He shook him to the core and almost ended him.

In his two fights since then, both in Cardiff… AJ first struggled against the smaller last-minute opponent, Carlos Takam, before it was stopped on cuts, many say prematurely… and then struggled to a boring points win against Kiwi Joseph Parker.

He’s also had just 21 fights, rarely going into the later rounds to test his stamina.

Deontay Wilder, on the other hand, has fought almost twice the number of opponents and has never even taken a knee. He’s knocked out all of them but one. That’s 39 heavyweights. Out cold.

The fight is still most likely gearing up to be a tight Joshua win (followed by a raucous rematch), but don’t underestimate the brutal punching power and the awkward, unpredictable, flashy style that Wilder will bring to the battle.
