Mexican star wants win over Jacobs to launch World title bid

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has issued a warning to the World Super Middleweight champions that he’s coming for their titles after he takes on Daniel Jacobs at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Phoenix, Arizona on Friday December 20, live on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

Chavez Jr (51-3-1 33 KOs) takes on fellow former Middleweight king Jacobs (35-3 29 KOs) in a crunch clash at 168lbs, with both men gunning for a shot at the clutch of talented fighters with belts in the division in 2020.

The 33 year old returned to action with a first round KO in Mexico in August after two years out following his clash with fellow countryman Canelo Alvarez in May 2017, and Chavez Jr believes that a big win over the ‘Miracle Man’ will set him up for a title shot against the likes of Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders.

“This is the right fight to get me back to the top,” said Chavez Jr. “It’s a big risk because of the activity he’s had, but I am not a stepping stone for him, I am ready and I need to win the fight and I know I have the skills and the heart to win.

“There are a lot of good fighters out there at 168lbs; not big names but strong guys. I feel I can beat them all and with the right decisions I will get there, and that starts with a win over a great fighter like Jacobs. I am a fighter and I take the risks, now I am doing things right.

“I think this is my time, and now I need to take the next big step. It’s going to be a good fight for the fans and after that I’ll be ready to win another World title. This feels like a World title fight as Danny is a true champion and so am I.”

Chavez Jr and Jacobs clash on a huge night of action in Phoenix as Julio Cesar Martinez takes on Cristofer Rosales for the vacant WBC World Flyweight title.

The Welterweight division is in focus on the card as Maurice Hooker starts his quest to become a two-weight World champion as he moves up to Welterweight and takes on Uriel Perez on his bow at 147lbs. Josh Kelly is one of the stand out talents in the Welterweight division, and he meets Winston Campos as he closes in on a clash with European champion David Avanesyan at the start of 2020. Olympic gold medal man Daniyar Yeleussinov is another Welterweight star on the card and he looks to impress in his ninth pro outing against Alan Sanchez.

Gabriel Rosado will have a keen eye on the main event as he fights for the 38th time as a pro against Humberto Ochoa while Brit star Liam Smith continues his charge to a second World title reign in a ten round clash with Roberto Garcia.

FIRST AERIAL SHOTS OF ‘SPECTACULAR’ DIRYAH ARENA REVEALED

In less than a week Saudi Arabia will host what is regarded as one of the biggest sporting events to ever be staged in the Middle East, the highly-anticipated Heavyweight World Championship fight dubbed ‘Clash on the Dunes’ presented by Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Many have already marveled at the speed of the arena build that will host the fight which was planned to become one of the world’s largest outdoor stadiums and one that had to be built in under two months.

The 15,000-seat purpose-built outdoor arena’s construction kicked off on the 7th of October and used almost 300 tons of steel to cover an area of 10,000 sqm at the center of historic UNESCO heritage site, Diriyah, the birthplace of the first kings of Saudi Arabia. It took 175 working dedicated staff to finish the works in time for what is considered the biggest fight in the past fifty years.

Touring the Diriyah Arena, Heavyweight ruler Andy Ruiz Jr said: “It’s amazing man, it’s crazy how they built everything in a month and a half. It’s amazing to be fighting over here, it’s going to be really historic and I’m planning to make history over here. It’s a lot different. When I first got here none of this was here so it’s unbelievable.”

The massive structure will take more than 2000 staff members to operate it on fight night and will seat 300 media with hundreds more seated in a nearby media center. The magnitude of the fight and the historical location will have all eyes on Saudi come December 7^th.

Just like media, fans are flocking to Diriyah from all over the world. People from over 65 countries have bought tickets to see the heavyweights go at it from seats of the arena.

“It’s going to be an incredible night and I’m thrilled so many of my fans are going to be there, particularly from the UK.

“It’ll definitely be a night people will tell their grandchildren they were at, one of those iconic evenings of boxing. Everyone from Saudi has been brilliant to work with.”

The Clash On The Dunes presented by PIF forms part of the Diriyah Season, epic month of sports which kicked off with Formula E at the weekend, the Diriyah Tennis Cup featuring eight of the best men’s players on the planet, and the Diriyah Equestrian Festival, an elite competition with Tokyo Olympics 2020 qualifying points on the line.

The Diriyah Season is also supported by the Diriyah Music Festival with huge concerts taking place around the event. On December 6, the night before the Clash On The Dunes, major artists who are yet to be announced will perform. So far artists such as Imagine Dragons, DJ Alan Walker, Clean Bandit and Maluma have performed to 40,000 concert goers.

The champion of full weight of the World Boxing Council, Wilder returns to face the Cuban puncher Ortiz.

LAS VEGAS (November 20, 2019) – WBC Deontay full weight champion “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder, and Cuban fighter Luis “King Kong” Ortiz met face to face at the final press conference before their fight of revenge in the main event of FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View this Saturday November 23 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Thursday’s press conference also featured three-division champion Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz and Miguel Flores who will face the vacant WBA super featherweight title.

“I am the best in the world and I say it with confidence. Having said that, I have to give fans what they want to see. Those are exciting fights. The full weight division was in a dark place, but now it is on fire and I must keep it going.

“Luis Ortiz is one of the best in the world and one of the most dangerous men in boxing. No one in the top 10 has given it a chance. They say he’s old, but if that’s the truth, then one of them should fight him.

“When I look at the panorama of the full weight division, this man was not yet having a chance. It was an amazing fight the first time and I will make adjustments this time. That’s what it is all about. I will be my best version Saturday night.

“I’d rather go through difficulties in the ring than have a perfect career. What kind of legacy would you leave? I want to give you something to remember me. ”

“Luis Ortiz looks good, but I don’t think it will matter against someone like me. I am fit 365 days a year. I come to the camp in shape. The first day of camp, we were training. It is always good to see my opponents fit and properly prepared for a war. That’s all I can ask because they know what they face when they go against me.

“This is a great billboard with great champions and fighters around here. What more could you want? There is nothing more to say. Now is the time to act. I hope to give everyone the best of me. ”

“We train very hard to be prepared and go to war. You know what to expect. The hard part is waiting. This it is. I can’t wait for Saturday night. My opponent has to be perfect to last 12 rounds, I just have to be perfect for a second. ”

LUIS ORTIZ

“I do not like lose. There were legitimate circumstances why I was not at my best in the first fight. It was a fatigue strike. I think if I had continued, I would have gotten the knockout. It was just fatigue, but I corrected it this time, so the best man will win. ”

“We will show you on Saturday night how we will win. But we are always ready to adapt. We will all see him on Saturday night. ”

“This will be the second world war between us. I’ve had 500 fights, including my amateur fights. In full weight, everyone has power. Sometimes it seems that a horse is kicking you. Wilder is very strong, but I will show what I know and what I can do.

“As I said before, and Deontay also said, this is not going to last 12 rounds. One of us will be knocked out. I wish there were no bells between rounds so we could continue.

“This is not just that Deontay fights with any other opponent. Obviously, Deontay had his reasons for taking this fight. But on Saturday, I’m going to show you why it was a mistake. I will be the new full-weight world champion.

“This is the Holy Grail, face the real world full weight champion. I want to be considered one of the best fighters in Cuba. I am very grateful to the coaches I had as a child who taught me the sport.

“I definitely want to thank Deontay, and all my team, for giving me this opportunity for a rematch. That’s what life is about. This will not be my last chance. I am here to fight and that is what you will see on Saturday night. ”

RYDER READY TO SHATTER SMITH’S ANFIELD DREAM
Mandatory challenger believes he can “exploit” ‘Mundo’

John Ryder has warned Callum Smith that he is ready to rip his WBA Super-Middleweight World title away from him and shatter his Anfield dream when they collide at the M&S Bank Arena Liverpool on Saturday, live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US.

Despite heading into this weekend’s all-British showdown coming off the back of four big knockout wins that secured him the No 1 ranking in the WBA and earned him the interim World title, Ryder believes he is being overlooked by Liverpool’s Smith.

“I’m being overlooked but he is the World Champion and the city’s big dream of a show at Anfield,” said Ryder. “He is the front-runner but I’m coming to cause the upset and, if I beat Smith, there will be no Anfield show. They might need to find a new headliner.”

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, the four-weight World Champion, is expected to return in May and ‘Mundo’ is hoping to be on the shortlist of his opponents. Billy Joe Saunders and Gennadiy Golovkin also count among Smith’s options if he retains his belt, but Ryder is ready to derail those plans and secure a mega-fight for himself.

“There have been a lot of highs and lows in my career so even fighting for a World title would have been a dream not so long ago. But now it’s here. In reality, without taking your eye off the ball, you do look at the carrot that’s being dangled. There are super-fights with big, massive names in America and you can’t help but to get excited.

“Winning would make be No 1 in the division and Canelo has proved that he likes to take on the top dogs, so you never know. But Smith is No 1 for a reason and I can’t take my eye off the ball with him.

“He hasn’t put a foot wrong, looked good in beating George Groves and Hassan N’Dam, but I just believe I can exploit him. I’m a different kettle of fish to what he’s faced before.”

FARRELL – FRIENDSHIP GOES OUT THE WINDOW ONCE THE BELL RINGS
‘Fazza’ primed for Liverpool vs. Birkenhead showdown

Tom Farrell insists that there will be no room for niceties when he steps in the ring with promotional stablemate and close friend Sean Dodd in a domestic Super-Lightweight battle at the M&S Bank Arena Liverpool on Saturday November 23, live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US.

Farrell (17-2, 5 KOs) is looking to land another title shot after he was outpointed by Philip Bowes in a clash for the Commonwealth crown at the M&S Bank Arena back in March and believes that a win over former Commonwealth Lightweight ruler Dodd will fire him into contention in 2020.

“I think Masher was the last person that I had on my mind when I heard that I was going to be earmarked for this show,” said Farrell. “I had my eye on a decent fight to get the ball rolling and get me back in contention for 2020 but Masher didn’t really come into my mind. We’re good mates and there hasn’t been any animosity between us in the build-up but once the bell rings on Saturday our friendship goes out of the window.

“It’s a fight that we both had to take really. I had a disappointing loss last time I fought at the arena and I think this could be Masher’s last chance. You could described it as a must-win fight for the both of us. This is a fight that could steal the show, I’ve said that from the start. He’s always in good fights and so am I. It has all of the ingredients for a cracker.”

Turning pro in September 2014, ‘Fazza’s’ sole title win came against Farid Hakimi in 2016 when he outpointed the Belgian over ten rounds to earn to WBA International title. He then lost his next title opportunity against controversial Hackney man Ohara Davies the following year before his loss to Bowes earlier this year.

The popular Liverpudlian hits the big 30 on Saturday and will be hoping to celebrate the milestone in style with a career-best win against Dodd that would set him up for a more fruitful 2020.

“We know each other very well. I think I’ll have enough experience and enough quality on the night to come out and springboard myself back into contention and get my career back on a good path. The last 12 months have been a bit difficult for me and my career has stalled a little bit so this is a big chance for me to push on and get a title.

“We’ll definitely be putting on a good show for the fans. I think there will be loads of us there. I always have a good crowd behind me and the Birkenhead faithful are always there for Masher. I’m one of the most liked lads in Liverpool fighting against one of the most liked lads in the UK in Masher Dodd. It’s a huge deal up here and I’m confident it won’t disappoint.”

Farrell vs. Dodd is part of a huge night of action in Liverpool.

MCCASKILL: I AM A GAME-CHANGER
Unified champion has applied scientific approach to rocket to success

Jessica McCaskill believes she has become a game-changer for women’s boxing as she prepares to defend her WBC and WBA World Super-Lightweight titles in a rematch with Erica Farias at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago on Saturday night, live on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

McCaskill (7-2 3 KOS) won the WBC crown in the same venue one year ago, defeating Farias on points over the ten round distance, and landing the World title in her second attempt having given Katie Taylor the toughest night’s work in her pro career to date in December 2017 in London for Taylor’s WBA Lightweight strap.

‘CasKILLA’ unified the 140lbs division in her next outing, seeing off another Argentine in Anahi Sanchez in Maryland in May, and while McCaskill knows that Farias (26-3 10 KOs) will be gunning for revenge, the 35 year old Chicagoan and her trainer Rick Ramos have grand plans for her next steps and will not allow her old foe to stand in the way.

“I feel right now I am the game-changer,” said McCaskill. “There are people that have been in the game that I am dethroning, I’m on a fast-track; I’ve won two World titles and fought for three in just nine fights, I feel like I am the wildcard and people are watching to see what is going to happen next.

“It’s a powerful stance to have in female boxing because I’ve always thought of it as a very scientific algorithm to men’s boxing, you cannot do the same as the men as it’s not the same career. Rick has always put me in position to make powerplays over and over again for different situations. I feel that people are learning from how we are moving through things and following our example.

“Rick has always been very transparent with me. He told me from the start that this would be a very fast-paced career, we had a handful of amateur fights together and then he said: ‘it’s time to turn pro’. There has been a very distinct difference between my first fight with Rick and my last couple of fights with him. I was knocking people out in 30 seconds and fighting at different weights, which didn’t matter as everything that he had instilled into my boxing was there. Being able to make that transition from amateur to pro with the same person is unheard of and to be as successful as we’ve been shows we’re doing the right thing.

“In the beginning people didn’t see me as a competitive player in the sport, so we had to do a lot of different things to get in the door. You have to be a ticket-seller to show that you bring in money, so we would buy a lot of tickets ourselves for my fight. In my third fight we needed to make some noise, so Rick put in a couple of thousand dollars of his son’s tuition money in and I put some money in, and everything stemmed off of that. I KO’d the girl and got a promotional deal and then the Taylor fight came along.

“We’re proud of the goals we’ve hit and we have more goals to meet and so does everyone in the gym, and we want to spread that to kids in schools, get them to continue to fight no matter what is going on.”

McCaskill’s rematch with Farias is part of a huge night of action in Chicago, topped by Oleksandr Usyk’s Heavyweight debut against Chazz Witherspoon.
