HAVNAA FACES AMERICAN DANGERMAN SANDS ON NOVEMBER 16

HAVNAA FACES AMERICAN DANGERMAN SANDS ON NOVEMBER 16

IBO International Cruiserweight Champion Kai Robin Havnaa (15-0, 13 KOs) will face the hard-hitting American dangerman Al Sands (20-4-1, 14 KOs) on November 16th in Oslo as he looks to move into World title contention.

Norway’s number one male boxer is back in the ring headlining a huge show at the historic Ekeberghallen venue alongside Katharina Thanderz, who meets Danila Ramos for the interim WBC World Super Featherweight crown.

Havnaa was last in action on June 22nd scoring a third-round stoppage win over Levani Lukhutashvili at the Forum Horsens in Denmark. This performance followed a career best win for the 30-year-old, who defeated Rad Rashid in front of his home fans in Arendal on March 2nd to claim his first major title.

Havnaa, the son of Norway’s only ever male World Champion, Magne Havnaa, must now put his World title aspirations on the line against his most dangerous opponent to date in order to prove he is ready to face the best in the division.

Sands, born in Haiti but now based in America, boasts an impressive 72 per cent knockout ratio with 18 of his 20 victories coming inside the distance. The 32-year-old is a former NABA-USA and Minneosaota State Cruiserweight Champion, who has also challenged for the WBO Oriental title.

“It’s amazing to headline a big show in Oslo,” says Havnaa. “Last time I boxed in Oslo was at the Spectrum on the undercard of Cecilia Brækhus in front of 10,000 fans. I’m sure this will be even better with all my supporters and a top Norwegian undercard. I’m very excited.

“My opponent is a very experienced skilled fighter with a long reach and good fundamentals. He is a big puncher, who has fought some of the best fighters in the world, and I will be preparing for the best Al Sands there is.

“I’ve always had a big talent to train hard, but now I’m also starting to master how to train smart. I’ve started to become an experienced fighter. I know what to do, and I know what not to do, and all this is going to take me to next level.

“You never know how good an opponent is until you’re trading punches with them, but from what I can see, Sands is my most dangerous opponent. Boxing is a sport full of surprises and with top shape cruiserweights, anything can happen, but on November 16th, I plan to show why I belong at the top.”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland admits he has taken a risk allowing Havnaa to face Sands, but reveals the reward could be a shot at the IBO World Champion.

“This is potentially a very dangerous fight for Kai,” said Sauerland. “We’re taking a risk here but the reward can be great. This is a chance for Kai to prove he belongs at the top level. If he comes through this, then we could look to make a fight between him and the current IBO World Champion Kevin Lerena.”

All the action will be broadcast live on Viasat 4 in Norway. Christian Ramberg, Programme Manager Sports for NENT Group, says:  “World class boxing finally returns to the capital with an amazing fight card. Kai Robin Havnaa will prove that he is a title contender against a very dangerous American opponent. With two knock out experts in action the viewers should not blink.”

Katharina Thanderz faces Danila Ramos for the interim WBC World Super Featherweight title, while Kai Robin Havnaa looks to move into World title contention with a cruiserweight clash against American dangerman Al Sands.

An action-packed undercard features undefeated cruiserweight prospect Kevin Melhus versus Ossie Jervier, light heavyweight Alexander Hagen against Emmanuel Feuzeu, super featherweight Bernard Torres taking on Yesner Talavera and cruiserweight Kent Erik Baadstad meeting Istvan Kun.

Tickets for ‘Capital Showdown’ on November 16th at the Ekeberghallen in Oslo are on sale now and available online via www.ticketmaster.no.

ÁLVAREZ AND KOVALEV FACE TO FACE IN LOS ANGELES

ÁLVAREZ AND KOVALEV FACE TO FACE IN LOS ANGELES

Canelo Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KOs) of Guadalajara, Mexico and Russian warrior Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (34-3-1, 29 KOs) organized a press conference recently in Los Angeles, California, to officially announce his 12-round clash. The event will take place on Saturday, November 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be broadcast live on DAZN.

CANELO ALVAREZ, WBC middleweight world champion:

“I am very grateful to all the fans as always. I am very motivated, it is an honor for me to share the ring with someone Kovalev, whom I met in 2012. Now we are about to make history. I know it will be the most difficult fight of my professional career. I will do my best in the ring and that day we can shout “Long live Mexico.”

SERGEY KOVALEV

“I am very happy to be here in Los Angeles. Thank God and thanks to Canelo and his team for getting this fight. I think this is a great test for me in my boxing career because he is one of the best fighters at the moment. I am happy and excited. Thanks for the support “.

EDDY REYNOSO, coach of Canelo Alvarez:

“Thanks to Golden Boy and DAZN. It was a very difficult fight to achieve, but the fight is already here. Only the great boxers and those who leave their mark become such fighters. We know Kovalev well and we know the challenge we are facing. He is a great boxer who leaves everything in the ring and in one blow, he could end the fight. And we know it will be a great challenge. We want Saul to be a champion in four weight classes. ”

JOSE “CHEPO” REYNOSO, Coach of Canelo Alvarez:

“I’m nostalgic and I can’t help remembering the beginnings of all this. Look back and I see everything: all the victories Saul has given me and my son, and future victories, make me happy. The Reynoso have been with Saul for more than 15 years, since he was a child. We trust that he will get the victory here. ”

BUDDY MCGIRT, Sergey Kovalev’s coach:

“Both types are true champions. Cinnamon, I’ve always admired you. Your coaches did a great job with you. I have to admit it. I really take my hat off for having the balls to step forward and live up to the challenge. Sergey, I love you to death, I respect you for accepting the challenge. Honestly, the only losers on November 2 are the people who don’t want the fight or come the fight. ”

EGIS KLIMAS, Manager of Sergey Kovalev:

“I don’t think this fight should be announced further. When you hear the names of Canelo Alvarez, Krusher Kovalev, that says everything that will happen on November 2. I don’t need to talk about Sergey: everyone knows who he is in boxing, and regarding Canelo, they know what they mean when they say: great kojones. ”

Cinnamon vs. Kovalev is a 12-round fight in the semi-complete weight division presented by Golden Boy, Main Events and Krusher Promotions. The event will take place on Saturday, November 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be broadcast live exclusively on DAZN.

Canelo and Jacobs grace Mexico City

Canelo and Jacobs grace Mexico City

Looking more like Wall Street bankers than tough hewn stripped down fighters, Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs showed mutual respect at TV Azteca in Mexico City, but each man said decisive victory would be theirs in Las Vegas, on May 4th…with Canelo promising a KO!

Golden Boy Promotions supremo Oscar De La Hoya summed it up as: “A great unification. I love it. This is a fifty/fifty fight.” And both already looked in fabulous shape. Daniel had seemingly borrowed John Travolta’s pristine white suit from Saturday night Fever, while Canelo was more conservatively attired in a charcoal gray suit.

At stake are Canelo’s WBC and Ring Magazine belts.  While Jacob’s IBF belt is on the table.  Canelo came to podium last, during the introductions.  There was mutual respect, but no hand shake between the two rivals.

Matchroom Promoter Eddie Hearn, who’s promising to buy a home I’m Mexico City soon…said: We want to thank Golden Boy and Canelo for accepting this huge challenge. DAZN are an amazing partner and we’re only just getting started.”

“Canelo has a tattoo on his arm saying no boxing no life. This demonstrates the passion for boxing in Mexico. Danny Jacobs is not only an amazing boxer, but an amazing man. After beating cancer hec was told by his doctors he would certainly not fight again. He stands before us today prepared to take part in the biggest fight of the year.”

Daniel Jacobs who thanked the Mexican people for a magnificent and hospitable welcome said: “my family is my biggest motivation. I love you guys. This fight means everything to me because of the caliber of fighter I face with Canelo. It’s the best possible fight you guys can see, come May 4th. We will give our all in that ring!”

Canelo thanked all of the Mexican and international media for their support and turning to Daniel, he also thanked him.

Canelo said: “For me it’s a great honor to represent Mexico. I’m training one hundred percent dedicating myself. I will have a difficult opponent in front of me, but I’m going for the KO to remain champion.”

World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman said: “It’s a very difficult fight, in which the level of competition is very high. Jacobs brings great motivation. He defeated cancer and he’s ready to go in and give it all inside the ring. Canelo is in the best moment and it’s just great to see champion vs champion in the ring.”

DEMETRIUS ANDRADE: I WILL PROVE I’M THE BEST AT MIDDLEWEIGHT IN 2019

“I’m out there trying to fight the undefeated guys, the champions, that’s what I want,” said Andrade. “I get in there with anyone at 160lbs – and I beat them all. It’s the time for the elite to fight each in 2019, people want to see me fight the big names and I want them.

ANDRADE: I WILL PROVE I’M THE BEST AT MIDDLEWEIGHT IN 2019

WBO ruler targeting blockbuster showdowns after Akavov Jan 18 defense

Demetrius Andrade has vowed to dominate the Middleweight division in 2019 – starting with the first defense of his WBO World title against Artur Akavov on Friday January 18 at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, New York, live on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

Andrade (26-0 16KOs) puts his WBO 160lb crown on the line for the first time against the Russian in New York, and the two-weight World ruler is eager to kick off 2019 with a bang having returned to the ring in style in 2018.

The Rhode Island star picked up the WBO crown with a commanding win over Walter Kautondokwa in Boston in October, flooring the undefeated African dangerman four times in the opening four rounds in his first fight in a year and his first title bout at 160lbs.

Andrade steps straight back into action and face-to-face with the ‘Wolverine’ Akavov (19-2 8KOs), who fights for the strap for the second time having ran previous incumbent Billy Joe Saunders close for the belt December 2016 in Glasgow.

‘Boo Boo’ knows that Akavov will put it all on the line in the Big Apple, but the champion wants to lay down a marker as the first of the Middleweight World champions to fight in 2019 – and he plans to prove that he will emerge as the top dog in a talent-heavy division with Canelo Alvarez, Daniel Jacobs, Gennady Golovkin, Jermall Charlo and Saunders amongst the huge names there for big fights.

“I’m out there trying to fight the undefeated guys, the champions, that’s what I want,” said Andrade. “I get in there with anyone at 160lbs – and I beat them all. It’s the time for the elite to fight each in 2019, people want to see me fight the big names and I want them.

“It’s going to happen, I am here, I’ve got the World title and I want the best. Akavov is coming to New York to take that title from me so I know that I have to be on my game as he’s a dangerous man, but trust me, when I shine on January 18, we’re going for all the big names next.

“My first fight was meant to be Saunders – an undefeated champion – and then I beat another undefeated fighter to win the title. That’s what I am about and that’s what I want my year to be, champion vs. champion, Demetrius Andrade vs. the best out there.”

Andrade clashes with Akavov on a huge night of action in New York, with a second World title bout on the card sees Amanda Serrano (35-1-1 26KOs) gunning for history as she looks to land World honors in an extraordinary seventh weight class as she meets WBC and IBF World Super-Flyweight champion Eva Voraberger (24-5 11KOs) – the Austrian tasked with stopping Serrano’s bid for glory.

Former World Lightweight ruler Jorge Linares continues his comeback trail on the card when he meets Pablo Cesar Cano. Linares’ (45-4 28KOs) reign as WBA and Ring Magazine champion was ended in an epic clash with pound-for-pound star Vasily Lomachenko at Madison Square Garden in May, with Linares felling the Ukrainian star in the sixth before being stopped four rounds later.

Linares returned to winning ways in September with a third round stoppage win over Abner Cotto in September in California and starts 2019 with his 50th pro fight against Cano (31-7-1 21KOs), the Mexican former World title challenger who landed the WBC International Silver strap in his last outing in September – and Linares is joined by fellow Golden Boy Boxing star Alexis Rocha (12-0 8KOs), the 21 year old Welterweight talent ready to begin his charge for titles in 2019.
Former World Super-Lightweight champion Chris Algieri (22-3 8KOs) made his return from two years out of the ring in November with a ten round win in Huntington, Long Island, and the 34 year old faces fellow New Yorker Danny Gonzalez (17-1-1 7KOs) in his second bout back, with the carrot of major fights later in the year dangling in front of Algieri.

One of Matchroom Boxing USA’s rising stars tastes his first action in 2019 on the card as Reshat Mati (2-0 1KO) returns to the scene of his last outing in October where the ‘Albanian Bear’ went the four round distance in his second fight.

RENOLD QUINLAN: I CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE IF I CATCH ‘EM CLEAN

“I’ve got my own unique style which I can change up. I guess I’m more of a puncher. I’ve got excellent timing and my record shows I cause serious damage if I catch ‘em clean with my right hand.”

QUINLAN: I CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE IF I CATCH ‘EM CLEAN

Australian hardcase Renold Quinlan has warned Joshua Buatsi that he possesses the power to inflict a first professional defeat on the rising Light-Heavyweight talent.

The pair clash for Buatsi’s WBA International title at The O2 in London this Saturday, live on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK and Showtime in the US, and Quinlan is looking to halt the Croydon talent’s rapid rise in its tracks.

“It’s another big opportunity to fight for a meaningful title, back in the UK,” said Quinlan. “It’s a big challenge and that’s what gets my juices racing. I don’t intend to let the chance slip.

“I tend not to study opponents so I don’t know much about Buatsi. I’ve heard he won an Olympic bronze medal and they don’t give those away so he must be capable.

“But I’ve got my own unique style which I can change up. I guess I’m more of a puncher. I’ve got excellent timing and my record shows I cause serious damage if I catch ‘em clean with my right hand.”

The three blotches on Quinlan’s CV came against credible company. Victoria’s unbeaten Jake Carr edged past him on a close decision in a 2014 Australian Super-Middle scrap and Brighton’s Chris Eubank Jr relieved him of his IBO crown by tenth round decision in his only prior visit to the UK in February last year.

In his first fight at 175lbs last April, Quinlan conceded to Queensland’s 13-1 Damien Hooper in round nine, but only after he had clubbed the 2012 London Olympic quarter-finalist to the canvas twice in round five.

“I’ve learnt a lot from those defeats,” said Quinlan. “I felt I was a bit unlucky with the decision against Carr. It was very close but he has a very high work rate and was the defending champion. I was going through a lot mentally, outside the ring at the time.

“The late stoppage defeat to Eubank taught me what elite athletes need to do to succeed. Physically I was right but I wasn’t mentally focussed. I was on a fast food diet and just tried to run the weight off.

“My loss to Hooper was another learning step. I guarantee I’ll be fitter and better focussed mentally on Saturday. I’m changing, improving all the time. I promise you’re going to see the best Renold Quinlan ever against Buatsi.”

Main event sees fierce Heavyweight rivals Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora rematch after their Fight of the Year contender in December 2016.

Charlie Edwards gets a second shot at a World title when he challenges Cristofer Rosales for the WBC Flyweight World title, David Price and Tom Little meet in a must win Heavyweight clash for both men, British Featherweight Champion Ryan Walsh puts his Lonsdale belt on the line against Watford’s Reece Bellotti, with Ipswich Heavyweight Fabio Wardley and Nigerian Middleweight Linus Udofia also featuring on the undercard.

Tickets are available to purchase from StubHub (www.stubhub.co.uk), The O2 (www.theo2.co.uk) and Matchroom Boxing (www.matchroomboxing.com)
