JAKE TINKLIN

Boxing has really helped with my confidence and has brought me out of my shell much more as an individual”.

They often say, “don’t meet your heroes”. Often people are disappointed, they are left wondering why they are so different to what they envisioned, why they didn’t fulfil their expectations and how they became ordinary once the initial excitement passed.

Much like many other fighters who grew up idolizing the sport’s most famed athletes, from the mainstream to the niche, from the Muhammad Alis and Mike Tysons to the Emanuel Augustus’ and Dave Allens, Jake Tinklin (6-0) grew up hoping he would one day be as good, if not better than his native idol: Gavin Rees (38-4-1).

The professional fighter from Risca (Tinklin) came from a boxing family who were accomplices of the former Welsh world champion (Rees) and ever since Tinklin was a youngster he had wanted to follow tradition.

“I first got involved in boxing through my father’s friend: Jamie Weetch. At the time he was a well-known amateur from Cwmcarn ABC and has now moved to Australia and competes as a pro. Me and my other five siblings got introduced to the head coach: Gary Butcher and we’ve never looked back since! Boxing has really helped with my confidence and has brought me out of my shell much more as an individual”.

After getting his first taste for the sport in the Welsh amateur circuit, Tinklin quickly began to develop and attract the attention of domestic coaches looking for a prospect to start working with. It wouldn’t be long before the young and ambitious Tinklin would yield the attention of his idol, and now trainer.

Gavin Rees: “I’ve known Jake’s family all of my life and that’s how I first came to meet him. I’ve been working with him for four years now, we’ve been very unlucky not to get Welsh titles in the amateurs and Jake (Tinkin) has boxed a load of brilliant lads. I think the pro system suits his game to a tee, he might be used to the fast 3-round pace of the amateurs but once he settles into the 6-8 rounds he’ll really do well”.

The 22-year-old welterweight had the early ambition to be recognized as one of Wales’ most prestigious fighters, he wanted to be held in the same stead as the Calzaghes, Wildes, Selbys and most importantly his chosen favourite: Rees. At the age of 18 and still competing as a top-level amateur, Tinklin would bare arms with the very man who brought him to the squared circle.

“My dad used to take me to watch him (Rees) fight all the time and is still my boxing idol today and even better he’s now my trainer. Dreams do come true!”

“I have to thank Gavin (Rees) for being such a great friend and mentor to me. He puts so much
time and effort into me and I’m really thankful for him. His training is so hard and he doesn’t let
you stop, but that’s what you need in this sport”.

By the age of 18, Tinklin had already achieved one of his most important goals in the sport. Since they formed an allegiance in the amateurs, Tinklin and Rees have been working together ever since and appear to have one of those unique coach/fighter relationships that many of the sport’s greats have shared. They often say that boxing is not just an individual sport, it’s who you have in your corner, and for Tinklin his corner is among the best available in the country.

It has been seen many times in the sporting world before, an athlete will achieve their lifelong goals too early and peak at a young age, leading to a disastrous fall from grace when motivation slowly diminishes and the drive behind their beginnings begin to fade, much like Connor McGregor’s rise and fall from superstardom. Tinklin is not in any danger of falling into that bracket however, as the Welsh prospect is still yet to fulfil his childhood dream of becoming one of Wales’ most famed prizefighters. Tinklin has found motivation in multiple avenues of life along his road to today, and his drive for success only grows every day.

Now 5 fights into his professional career, Tinklin has a new source of motivation to add to his list of ambitions.

“I’ve always been self-motivated as I love the sport so much, but now I want it even more to provide for my son and so he has something to look back on. I want to provide a big future for him when he’s older and that’s why I’m heading to the top”.

The father to be speaks of a bold future in the sport, but his confidence seems justified with a deep knowledge and understanding of boxing acquired over a high-level amateur career and frequent sparring contested against the best fighters in the UK.

“The best part of my ability as a boxer would be my jab, I can work behind it and create openings wherever the fight may lead. I always put 110% into every single fight and the same goes for my training camps. There’s blood and sweat everyday”.

Looking toward his future goal of becoming Wales’ next great, Tinklin remains optimistic yet calculated.

“I’m not going to stop until I get those titles. In five-years-time I want to be somewhere where my son can look up to, I want to be in huge televised fights so I can really show the world what I can do and make something for my little boy.”

Tinklin has the privilege to work with his boxing idol in the quest for superstardom and domestic glory, whereby the pairing will be keen to pursue titles in the foreseeable future. It might seem a monumental task to achieve similar feats to Calzaghe and Rees, but Tinklin’s intentions remain set in stone.

Losing is not an option for me. I will get those titles”.

Chris Jenkins

Boxing is my entire world. It’s my life. I have friends who have memories of climbing trees and playing, but all I remember is boxing. It’s a bug that I have forever.”

A few miles north of Swansea, lies the quaint mining village of Garnant. Since the closure of the village’s last big colliery in 1936, the noise emitting from the leafy suburb has been dampened.

That is until a young Chris Jenkins first wrapped his fists and eased his way into a pair of boxing gloves.

Growing up in a mining time might have its perks, sure its quiet and peaceful, but what does it have to offer for a 12-year-old boy? Perhaps the absence of theme parks and amusements worked in Chris’ favour.

If I’m honest I started boxing because I was bored. I grew up in an area of Wales where there was nothing about and nothing really to do. I needed to get out of the house and focus on something, so when I was 12, I picked up a pair of boxing gloves.”

Boxing is my entire world. It’s my life. I have friends who have memories of climbing trees and playing, but all I remember is boxing. It’s a bug that I have forever.”

The Welshman exploded onto the fight scene, after only seven professional fights he became the 31st Prizefighter champion and is the current BBBofC British Welterweight champion.

Chris’ rise hasn’t been all smooth sailing though, in fact the last 12 months have proved to be the Welshman’s toughest test yet. In May of 2018 Chris picked up the third loss of his career against Akeem Ennis-Brown, followed by a draw in August against Darragh Foley.

“I had a sit down with my coach Gary Lockett around August time last year, and I’d said to him that I’m going to walk away from the sport, I’d had enough. I got cut against Akeem Ennis-Brown and then same again with the Darragh Foley fight.

“At that point I was ready to walk away from the sport….I had been as as low as you can be in boxing, but stubbornness and support from my wife and coach kept me going”

After talking things through with Gary and his wife Chris decided against hanging up the gloves and shortly after, the 31-year-old was selected to challenge Johnny Garton for the British welterweight title.

“I was called up pretty late for the Johnny Garton fight, but after talking things through with the wife and Gary, we decided to go for it. So put everything into the camp with the time I had, and, on the night, I won the belt.”

Chris put on a performance worthy of its stage, winning unanimously in the famous Royal Albert Hall. This fight seemed to be the turning point in Chris’ career and the British title gave him the driving force to dust off any remaining cobwebs and push on.

“Before the fight, I thought to myself, this is a last chance saloon. If I lose this one, I’m done. Things just seemed to fall into place for me and after that I went up to Belfast and defended that title and won the Commonwealth title at the same time, so you could say things were on the up for once.”

As if commitments to life as a professional boxer weren’t challenging enough, Chris has a strict commitment to follow outside of the ring. The school run.

“An average day for me starts with making breakfast for me and the kids, getting them dressed with the help of the wife and then get my gym bag ready and head off to Cardiff by about 10.”

The minute he’s in the gym, it’s all eyes on the prize

.

“Once I get there, I’ll train until around 1pm and then head home to chill out with the kids. At 7pm I’ll head to my local gym and get a nice cardio session in on the running machines, the bikes etc. Then its back home to put the kids to bed, spend some time with the wife and then get ready to start all over again the next day.”

Chris trains alongside another Welsh professional boxer, Nathan Thorley, who is currently making his own rise through the light-heavyweight division.

In a recent interview with Fight Scene, Nathan spoke of his fondness towards Chris and how much of a boost it is to have him in the gym.

Chris weighed in with his thoughts.

“Ahhh Nathan Thorley, he trains at the gym with me. He loves me he does. I’m a bit of a clown in the gym sometimes, we have a lot of banter between all the Cardiff boys, so it’s always a good crack. But when it’s time to work, we work and when you see the other lads winning, it rubs off on you and makes you want to win as well.”

Chris is set to defend his welterweight title for a second time in Birmingham come the end of November, against a tough opponent in Liam Taylor.

But given the opportunity, is there anyone in the fight scene that Chris would love to face instead, in a winner takes all dream bout.

With all honesty he admitted:

“A dream fight would be whoever pays me the most and that’s the honest truth. I’m not in the game to not make money, I want to make money now for the kids and so that I can be comfortable for a good few years.”

To finish off, we took a look at the impending second title defence and delved into Chris’ mindset going into this fight, considering that 12 months prior, he was prepared to hang up his gloves.

“Well once again we’re on the road – as the song says… we’re on the road again. Preparations are going well, I’m keeping steady, trying not to push myself over the limit. I’ve done 16 rounds in two days with Robbie Davies at one time with another 10 rounds with Kaisee Benjamin from Birmingham soon after.”

“I’m feeling up for it. I’m confident, but I wouldn’t say I’m arrogant, because it’s boxing at the end of the day and one punch can end the fight.”

RADOVAN ADDED TO BLOCKBUSTER WBSS BILL ON OCTOBER 26TH

RADOVAN ADDED TO BLOCKBUSTER WBSS BILL ON OCTOBER 26TH

German middleweight star Denis Radovan (12-0-1, 5 KOs) will make his international debut on October 26th on the undercard of the Ali Trophy Super Lightweight Final between Josh Taylor and Regis Prograis at The 02 in London.

The 27-year-old returns to the ring having secured the IBF European title with a points win over domestic rival Ronny Mittag in Wolfsburg in April, and will look to continue his climb up the middleweight ladder against former Commonwealth Champion Luke Blackledge (26-8-2, 9 KOs).

“It’s unbelievable to be boxing on such a big show,” said Radovan. “This is without a doubt the biggest show I have ever boxed on, and I have to thank my promoters Team Sauerland for this fantastic opportunity.

“I know Blackledge very well, we had some very tough sparring sessions in Germany so I know I’m in for a tough fight, but I also took a lot of confidence from these spars. I’ve had a great camp and preparations have been perfect.”

Blackledge, a seasoned contender, has faced the likes of ex-WBA World Champion Rocky Fielding and series one World Boxing Super Series victor, WBA Super and Ring Magazine Champion Callum Smith, and is confident his experience will give him the edge against the unbeaten Radovan.

“I’m excited to get another big chance. I want to make a statement and put on a show,” said Blackledge. “I’ve had a great camp, I’ve been over to Norway to spar, and now I’m fit and I’m ready to go!

“I was in Germany sparring Tyron Zeuge a few years ago and Radovan was in the same training camp, so I spent the whole month in camp with him sparring and training so I know what he’s about.

“I know I’m going to have to go through hell and I’m going to take him somewhere he’s never been before. With my experience, grit and determination to win it’s going to be a hard night for him. I won’t lie down for anyone – I’m going there to win 110%.”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland is anticipating an excellent night of action and is looking forward to watching rising star Radovan make his UK debut.

“Fighting on a card like this is a very special opportunity for Denis,” said Sauerland. “This will be his first fight abroad and with Blackledge he gets a very experienced opponent who has boxed plenty of big names. All in all Denis can take a lot out of this fight!”

World Boxing Super Series Super Lightweight finalists Regis Prograis (24-0, 20 KOs) and Josh Taylor (15-0, 12 KOs) headline the huge show at The 02 as both fighters compete for the Ali Trophy, IBF and WBA World titles, WBC Diamond title and the prestigious Ring magazine strap.

London’s Dereck Chisora (31-9, 22 KOs) takes on popular Liverpudlian David Price (25-6, 20 KOs) in a hotly anticipated British heavyweight duel, while fellow Londoner Lawrence Okolie (13-0, 10 KOs) looks to add another belt to his collection as he challenges Yves Ngabu (20-0, 14 KOs) for the Belgian’s European Cruiserweight title.

Former World Champions Ricky Burns (43-7-1, 16 KOs) and Lee Selby (27-2, 9 KOs) meet in an intriguing lightweight clash, whilst Team Sauerland’s exciting contender Abass Baraou (7-0, 4 KOs) makes his UK debut against the resilient John O’Donnell (33-2, 11 KOs).

Also featuring on the stacked fight card are young stars Conor Benn (15-0, 10 KOs), Austin Williams (3-0, 3KOs) and Shannon Courtenay (3-0, 1 KO) who continue their education in the paid ranks. All the action from the 02 Arena is available to watch live on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK and DAZN in the US. Tickets are available online via www.AXS.com.

CW108 Fight Night Results

CW108 Fight Night Results

Cage Warriors retuned to Cardiff with an electric card topped by a main-event win for the still-unbeaten Welsh prospect Mason ‘The Dragon’ Jones.

It was a main event that lived up to the hype, and arguably the most mature performance of Jones’ undefeated career so far.

The Welshman bested Aleksi Mantykivi over three rounds at the top of the bill, controlling the Fin with razor sharp striking and a solid ground offence. ‘The Dragon’ is evolving, and has his eyes set on the very top of the division. He’ll no doubt be watching lightweight champion Jai Herbert’s title defence at CW109 very closely.

Another Welsh prospect remained unbeaten in the co-main, when Oban Elliott submitted James Lilley to the roar of the home crowd. Elsewhere on the main card, Shaun Luther shocked the crowd with a definite contender for knockout of the year, and Josh Reed returned to form with a submission win over Ivan Zidar.

Highlights from the Pro Prelims included a devastating knockout win for Wales’ own Ben Ellis, who improves to 2-0 in the featherweight division after a similarly perfect 8-0 unbeaten run as an amateur.

It was undoubtedly one of Cage Warriors most exciting Welsh cards ever, with all but 2 of the 19 bouts ending within the distance.

In a breaking news announcement, Light-Heavyweight champion Modestas Bukauskas joined fans at the arena to confirm he will be defending his belt on November 22nd at CW111. That’s three world title fights now confirmed for the London Indigo at the O2, with James Webb and Mads Burnell putting their titles on the line. Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett will also make his return on the card, which is shaping up to be one of Cage Warriors’ biggest this year.

Next up for Cage Warriors is a return to Birmingham’s Resorts World Arena for CW109 on October 26th, headlined by lightweight champion Jai Herbert in his first title defence.

All the fights to look out for this Saturday night, and how to tune in around the world.

It’s almost time for Cage Warriors’ return to Cardiff!

In the main event this Saturday night, unbeaten Welsh prospect Mason ‘The Dragon’ Jones will go head-to-head with Finnish striking sensation Aleksi Mäntykivi at the Viola Arena.

Now 7-0 in the lightweight division, many believe Jones to be the most exciting Welsh prospect on the European scene, and predict for him a similar future to previous Cage Warriors champions turned UFC stars Jack Shore, Brett Johns and Jack Marshman.

 .

But Mäntykivi – the only man to hold a win over former champion Søren Bak – is expected to give ‘The Dragon’ his toughest test yet, having picked up 2 consecutive knockout wins already this year.

This is Jones’ first main event headline appearance at the Viola Arena, a now-notorious venue for the sport of MMA in Wales which has hosted his last two fights against Donovan Desmae and Kacper Formela.

The CW108 main card will also feature appearances from surging Welsh prospects Oban Elliott and Cory McKenna, returning veteran Martin McDonough and former title challenger Josh ‘Crazyhorse’ Reed, who narrowly lost to the UFC’s Nathaniel Wood for the belt in 2017.

Two amateur title fights will top the CWA Wales card to kick off the event, followed by a pro-prelim card stacked with emerging Welsh talent.

Cage Warriors 108 will take place at the Cardiff Viola Arena this Saturday night, the 12th October. Tickets are still on sale HERE. Fans at the arena will also have the chance to participate in a free meet and greet with UFC stars Jack Shore and Brett Johns, as well as Cage Warriors light-heavyweight champion Modestas Bukauskas.

MO Prior & Priority Boxing are delighted to announce the next stage in their continued & increasing involvement in the career of Olympic Silver Medallist & 15 time All Ireland Champion, John Joe Nevin, (Mullingar, Ireland).

John Joe will top Priority Boxing’s, 20th September, 2019, ” Enter the Dragon show, which features outstanding Welsh Prospects; Nathan Thorley, Maredudd Thomas, Rhys Edward’s, Jay Munn, Lance Cooksey, Joel Jason, JJ Evan’s, Craig Woodruff & Jacob Robinson at Vale Sports Arena, Penarth Rd, Cardiff CF11 8TW. John Joe will box, at super featherweight, an opponent will be announced in the near future.

Mo Prior

“It’s a pleasure to be working with one of boxing’s outstanding talents in John Joe Nevin & to be able to showcase a boxer of John Joe’s talent in the fight savvy, city of Cardiff, fittingly, topping a show that features a plethora of Welsh talent.

What a story & what pedigree John Joe Nevin has; 255 amateur contests, of which over 200 were internationals, only 15 losses & most of them by split decision.Olympic Silver, a double Olympian, twice World Bronze, all four losses, by split decision, to the eventual, tournament winners. John Joe also won both the European & European Union Championships  becoming, officially rated, World Number One, at his weight, before turning pro.

John Joe made his pro debut, in the USA, in Boston, live on USA TV, tipped, live in commentary, by Paulie Malignaggi, ‘he will definitely, win a World Title’. Only to go back to  Ireland & have both his legs broken, in an incident for which he still awaits criminal compensation.

John Joe was told he wouldn’t walk again let alone box. John boxed, for over a year, with 3.9lbs of metal in his legs, he wasn’t able to run or skip, so he trained, in therapy pools, in Philadelphia, under the auspices of Jeff Goldstein, tears running down John’s cheeks from the pain. Then John had to take the best part of a year off, back in Ireland, where he had the metal removed, before getting back into the therapy pools in Philly.

Now the suffering is over & his legs have never been stronger, plus he has the comfort of knowing the weight he’ll be campaigning at, super featherweight.

Mo Prior:

“What a pleasure it is to be promoting John Joe, he’s undefeated in 12 pro contests, John Joe  will go a long way, in the next 12 months, to achieving his goal of winning a world title.

Priority Boxing have an ongoing working relationship with John Joe’s management, where Priority Boxing will look to build a similar fan & support base, in the UK & Ireland, to match John Joe’s famed, Philadelphia, USA, following, enabling John Joe to pursue his career both sides of the Atlantic.”

John Joe Nevin:

“Working with Mo Prior & Topping a Fight Card in Wales is an honour, an honour I don’t take lightly, I look forward to entertaining my Celtic Cousins, the very knowledgeable, Cardiff, boxing connoisseurs, @ The Vale Sports Arena, on 20th September”
