ENZO CALZAGHE REACTS TO JOSHUA v TAKAM STOPPAGE

ENZO CALZAGHE REACTS TO JOSHUA V TAKAM STOPPAGE

‘ITS MY OPINION’

The performance in the fight was nothing like superb

Takam was small, and Anthony Joshua could have got rid of that guy as soon as he went down if he wanted to

Referring to the stoppage, Takam was a good guy, fit and ready to go on.  In my opinion the referee jumped in and bullied him out of the way, Why? I don’t believe it was a stoppage and rumours had been heard that a 10th round stoppage could happen, and I think we should let people have views on that

I can tell you from my heart the referee should not have stopped that fight, there was no obvious signs of brain damage or safety issues, no dangerous injury and it was a World Title Fight! Why did the referee jump in and what was the reason? I would like to know people’s opinions

I believe that something has gone wrong and AJ’s punching was sloppy, he was slapping and amateurish, and this could be down to the manager

Ive been all over America with world champions and this was a poor performance in my opinion. AJ has been graced a superstar, however he didn’t show a superstar status

In my professional opinion we need to raise his power via the boxing peformance

Final Words from Enzo Calzaghe

Ive created world champions. Joe Calzaghe, Enzo Macarrinelli, Gavin Rees, Cleverly

If they want me to train him give me half a million.. Ill make him a World Champ and Superstar.

STANDING TALL: MANY GREAT WARRIORS TO RETIRE

During the past 2 weeks a series of news have come from great warriors of the ring announcing their retirement from boxing. So many stories, memories and glory moments came from these heroes of the ring. Just as they began to box as kids with dreams to capture glory, they all now stand tall with the praise of millions all over the world for their accomplishments.

Japanese champions Uchiyama and Miura announced their retirement, representing Teiken Promotions. Miura conquered the WBC Super featherweight green and gold. Lost his title in the fight of the year 2015 to Francisco Vargas then won a final elimination in a dramatic fight vs Micky Roman and recently lost to WBC champion Miguel Berchelt.

Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero has retired. A former WBC welterweight champion and a true role model to the youth has decided to hang up the gloves. Robert has fought inside the ring many years as well as outside the ring with exemplary dedication to the care of his wife. A true champion of life.

Timothy Bradley is now retired. He was a 2 time WBC youth champion and then went on to win the WBC Super lightweight crown twice.

Juan Manuel Marquez has also taken the decision to retire, after 3 years of thinking whether to continue fighting, he has made the right decision. A hero in Mexico and many parts of the world, has money and a beautiful family, works in ESPN and has the recognition of the fans as one of the greatest champions from Mexico. His legendary Knockout over Manny Pacquiao will live on forever in the memories of all as one of the greatest sports moments for Mexican athletes.

Wladimir Klitschko surprised the world with the announcement a few days ago. While everyone was expecting to announcement of a rematch vs Anthony Joshua, Wladimir has also taken the greatest decision of his life. Wladimir, brother of Vitali will be remembered as a legendary champion. The Klitschko brothers dominated the heavyweight division for more than a decade and the only reason for Wladimir not being ever a WBC champion, was because it was Vitali, his dear brother the WBC champion.

Klitschko gave the world one of the greatest heavyweight fights in many years and it marked the end of his career as he can retire with pride after such performance against a young star Anthony Joshua.

Just as these heroes move on their lives, the new generation is moving in to give boxing fans a new era of excitement. Boxing is going through a great moment and history is on the making.  There are so many great champions, many great fights and many new tournaments and formats to look forward to.

KATIE TAYLOR MAKES US DEBUT

Katie Taylor makes US debut on Broner-Garcia bill

Bray star heading to Brooklyn on July 29

Katie Taylor will make her US debut on Saturday July 29 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, on Sky Sports.

Irish amateur sensation Taylor has impressed since joining the professional ranks in November, winning all five of her fights to date with three inside the distance, and moved into line for a WBA World Lightweight title shot in her last outing in April when the Bray favourite stopped Nina Meinke at Wembley Stadium in London to collect the WBA Inter-Continental strap into the bargain.

Taylor fights over eight rounds on her bow on American soil, and the 31 year old is excited to be on the bill topped by the Super-Lightweight showdown between four-division World champion Adrien Broner and unbeaten three-division World Champion Mikey Garcia.

“I’m really excited about boxing in the US because I’ve been training in Connecticut for all my fights to date,” said Taylor. “It’s great now to actually have a fight over here and especially on such a big card.

“The Barclays Center is a fantastic arena. I was there to see the DeGale – Jack fight in January, that was a great fight and the Broner – Garcia fight is another terrific matchup so it’s brilliant to get the opportunity to be part of that event.

“It’s great to see two top fighters like Broner and Garcia willing to fight each other. That’s what boxing should be about, the best fighting the best and that’s really something I want to do throughout my career as well.

“The last time I fought in the US was almost 10 years ago when I was invited to take part in a demonstration bout at the Men’s World Championships in Chicago. It was part of the campaign to convince the IOC to include women’s boxing in the Olympics.

“I stopped my opponent inside a round that night but hopefully I’ll get the chance to get a few more rounds under my belt at The Barclays Center and showcase my ability to a new audience. I’m sure that there’s going to be lots of Irish fans in the crowd on July 26 and I can’t wait to hear them cheering me on.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn added: “I’m so pleased to see Katie make her American debut on such an outstanding card. I believe Katie is the most entertaining and dangerous fighter in women’s boxing and has already lit up many venues in her professional journey, most recently Wembley Stadium on the Joshua v Klitschko card in front of 90,000. She is one of the biggest stars in Ireland and we are expecting fantastic support from the Irish community on the east coast for her first US experience.”
