SCARDINA BACK IN ACTION IN MILAN ON OCTOBER 25

SCARDINA BACK IN ACTION IN MILAN ON OCTOBER 25
Patera defends European crown against Valentino

The Allianz Cloud in Milan will host another evening of Championship Boxing when Matchroom Boxing Italy and OPI Since 82 return on Friday October 25 for a stacked card full of title action to be shown live on DAZN.

Previously known as the PalaLido, the historic venue played host to an electric night of boxing in June as rising star Daniele Scardina outpointed Alessandro Goddi and European Lightweight Champion Francesco Patera stopped Paul Hyland Jnr in six rounds.

Scardina (17-0, 14 KOs) retained his IBF International Super-Middleweight title with a classy unanimous decision over Goddi earlier this summer and ‘King Toretto’ puts his ranking title on the line once more as he looks to secure a World title shot.

Patera (22-3, 8 KOs) returns to make the third defence of his European title against Campania’s Domenico Valentino (8-0, 1 KO), a former amateur World Champion, three-time Olympian and current Italian Lightweight Champion.

Ukraine’s rising Welterweight talent Maxim Prodan (17-0-1, 14 KOs) was last seen decisioning Nika Nakashidze and now gets the opportunity to fight for his second pro title when he meets Welshman Tony Dixon (12-2, 3 KOs) for the full IBF International Welterweight Championship.

Verbania Super-Middleweight Ivan Zucco (9-0, 8 KOs), Milan Super-Middleweight Luca Capuano (10-0, 2 KOs), Milan Middleweight Riccardo Merafino (6-0, 3 KOs), Bonemerse Super-Welterweight Nicholas Esposito (10-0, 5 KOs) and Navora Super-Welterweight Samuel Nmomah (11-0, 3 KOs) all feature on the undercard.

“Daniele Scardina is quickly establishing himself as one of the stars of the resurgence in Italian boxing and this year we have seen him score impressive back-to-back wins in Milan,” said Eddie Hearn. “We’re building something exciting in Milan after two successful shows and Daniele is at the forefront of that success. It’s another show full of title action as Francesco Patera defends his European title in an all-Italian clash with plenty more action further down the card.”

Salvatore Cherchi of OPI Since 82 said: “It’s always a pleasure to return to this historic boxing venue in Milan. Once again, we have three title fights topping the card with the popular Daniele Scardina back in action. The European Lightweight title is an all Italian affair between Franceso Patera and Domenico Valentino and knockout artist Maxim Prodan is looking for another big win.”

Veronica Diquattro, EVP Southern Europe DAZN, affirmed: “With this event in Milan, it will be a pleasure to conclude the first year of our collaboration with Matchroom Boxing Italy and OPI Since 82, which saw the return of Italian boxing to the spotlight with eight great nights, after years in which it had lost interest. We have guaranteed great visibility for Italian boxers and boxing not only on a national level but, also internationally within the other eight countries where DAZN is present. We are looking forward to continuing our adventure in the next season.”

Tickets will be available to purchase next week via www.ticketone.it

HUGHES – I ALREADY FEEL LIKE A BRITISH CHAMPION

“Winning the British title has always been a goal of mine as a professional boxer,” said Hughes. “Ever since I started boxing it’s been the belt that I wanted. I think it’s the same for all British fighters, it’s the most prestigious belt out there and I’m excited to be going for it again later this month.

HUGHES – I ALREADY FEEL LIKE A BRITISH CHAMPION
Malmesbury man targets another away day win on March 30

Joe Hughes is determined to win the British Super-Lightweight title at the second time of asking.

He was left frustrated and angry after 12 battling rounds against former British Champion Tyrone Nurse at the Leicester Arena in 2017 that resulted in a draw. Hughes is still convinced that he won the fight by two rounds and believes his former amateur rival was saved by the judges.

The Malmesbury fighter gets a second shot at the Lord Lonsdale crown when he clashes with current Champion Robbie Davies Jr at The M&S Bank Arena Liverpool on March 30, live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US.

Since his first attempt at the British title, Hughes has gone on to claim the European title against Andrea Scarpa in a career-best win on away soil in Italy, but insists the British title has been the belt he has wanted most since turning pro in 2010.

“Winning the British title has always been a goal of mine as a professional boxer,” said Hughes. “Ever since I started boxing it’s been the belt that I wanted. I think it’s the same for all British fighters, it’s the most prestigious belt out there and I’m excited to be going for it again later this month.

“Obviously I’ve won the European title which is a bigger belt in terms of rankings and things like that, but the British belt is special and to win it would be a huge honour. In a way I feel like I’m already a British Champion but it would be nice to finally get my hands on the belt.

“I should already have it. I drew for it last time I challenged for it. I thought I won the fight and most people thought I won the fight. I thought I beat Tyrone by two rounds when we fought back in 2017. He was a 9-1 ON favourite and I think the media couldn’t believe how the fight went.

“I felt I was hitting the cleaner shots and more of them. We wanted the rematch but it never materialised. Now I’ve got another chance to win it and I’m confident of taking it home with me this time. I’m going to win clearly enough so that the judges can’t give it any other way.”

28-year-old Hughes, 17-3-1, has travelled all over the country as an away fighter, winning the Southern Area title against Londoner Phillip Bowes at The O2 and then the English title against Anthony Upton in Walsall, and the Wiltshire man is relishing another away day, this time on Merseyside.

“I’m away from home in his backyard but that doesn’t bother me at all. It’s a huge show for Liverpool and there’s some great Liverpudlian talent on the card. I’m sure the place will be packed to the rafters with scousers and I’m excited by that. I’ve just been to Italy where the place was packed with Italians and I still came away with the win so going to Liverpool doesn’t faze me.

“Liverpool is a great boxing city and I haven’t fought there since I was an amateur so I’m looking forward to going back. Obviously he’s going to have more support in there than me but I’ll be bringing as many as possible with me. I’m not fazed by going away, I’ve done it plenty of times now and it’s nothing new to me.”

Hughes vs. Davies Jr is part of a huge night of action in Liverpool.

Main event sees former WBO Super-Welterweight World Champion Liam Smith make his long-awaited Liverpool homecoming against Sam Eggington.

Former Great Britain teammates Anthony Fowler and Scott Fitzgerald look to settle their longstanding feud in a dynamite Super-Welterweight clash.

Popular Heavyweight David Price takes on the unbeaten Kash Ali in his first fight in Liverpool for nearly there years as he looks to make a fresh charge on the Heavyweight division following his win over Tom Little at The O2.

Liverpool’s Tom Farrell challenges Leytonstone’s Philip Bowes for the Commonwealth Super-Lightweight crown.

There’s also action for rising Liverpool Cruiserweight talent Craig Glover, ‘Miss GB’ Natasha Jonas and undefeated Super-Lightweight Ged ‘G-Man’ Carroll.

DOCHERTY – I WANT TO FOLLOW IN RICKY BURNS’ FOOTSTEPS

“I’ve been getting some great rounds in with Craig Richards, Ted Cheeseman and Felix Cash. I’m feeling stronger than ever and I want another knockout on February 2nd.”

DOCHERTY – I WANT TO FOLLOW IN RICKY BURNS’ FOOTSTEPS
‘The Doc’ inspired training alongside three-weight World Champ in build-up to Feb 2

John Docherty is determined to emulate gym mate and compatriot Ricky Burns by winning a World title of his own one day.

The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist trains alongside Scottish legend Burns at Tony Sims’ gym in Essex, where he is currently preparing for his third professional outing at The O2 in London on February 2.

Burns created history by becoming Scotland’s firs three-weight World Champion in May 2016 when he added Super-Lightweight glory to his Super-Featherweight and Lightweight titles by stopping Michele Di Rocco for the WBA title in Glasgow, and in doing so inspired a wave of new talent.

“Ricky is a legend in Scotland and someone that I’ve always looked up to,” said Docherty. “It’s an honour to train alongside him every day, I’ve already learnt so much from him. He’s one of the most dedicated fighters out there, never misses a session and always puts 100% effort in.

“His attitude is infectious, it’s great to be around people like him. He’s always sharing his knowledge and advice with me – I couldn’t be in a better place. He really is an inspiration to younger fighters like myself and I intend on taking full advantage of his wealth of experience.

“His dedication has taken him to the very top of the sport. It’s one thing having the talent and ability, but it’s his complete devotion to the sport that has got him to where he is today. I want to follow in his footsteps and bring a World title back to Scotland. I’m aiming high, but what’s the point being in this game if you don’t want to be the best?”

Docherty, 21, has made a perfect start to life in the paid ranks, blitzing Jordan Latimer in 8 seconds on his debut in Newcastle in October before halting Angel Castillo in Florence, Italy a month later, and the Former Team GB member is hoping to carry his explosive form into 2019.

“Everything has gone great so far,” added Docherty. “I just need to keep on doing what I’m doing in the gym and listening to Tony. I’m improving every day and I’ve got a great team around

me.

“I’ve been getting some great rounds in with Craig Richards, Ted Cheeseman and Felix Cash. I’m feeling stronger than ever and I want another knockout on February 2nd.”

Docherty features on a huge night of action in London.

Bermondsey star Ted Cheeseman steps up again when he challenges undefeated Spaniard Sergio Garcia for the European Super-Welterweight crown.

Undefeated British Cruiserweight Champion Lawrence Okolie returns to action after his win over Matty Askin at Wembley Stadium in September.

Light-Heavyweight rivals Jake Ball and Craig Richards finally face-off in a highly-anticipated grudge match for the WBA Continental title.

Rising Wokingham Middleweight talent Felix Cash fights for his second professional title when he takes on Nigeria’s Abolaji Rasheed for the vacant Commonwealth strap, with more fights to be announced soon.

Tickets for February available to purchase from StubHub (www.stubhub.co.uk), The O2 (www.theo2.co.uk) and Matchroom Boxing (www.matchroomboxing.com)

CAGE WARRIORS BIGGEST EVENT OF ALL TIME: TWO WORLDS ONE GOAL

This Saturday, Europe’s leading MMA promotion will stage their biggest event of all time at the Viola Arena in Cardiff, topped by a bantamweight world title fight between unbeaten super-prospects Jack Shore and Mike Ekundayo.

16 years of history. 99 numbered events staged across 3 continents. Almost 100 fighters sent to the UFC, including some of the sport’s biggest names – Conor McGregor, Michael Bisping, Dan Hardy, Joanna Jedrzejczyk… the list goes on.

Now it’s time for Cage Warriors to make history with the mammoth CW100 – their most impressive card to date.

Europe’s top bantamweight will be decided in the main event when undefeated stars Jack Shore and Mike Ekundayo go head-to-head for the title. Local hero Shore will have the packed-out Viola Arena behind him, but Ekundayo has promised to deliver an unforgettable performance to steal the away win. It’s one of the most closely contested fights in the promotion’s history – and too close to call for fans and critics alike. Only one man can be crowned champion!

In the co-main, Aiden Lee and Dean Truman fight for the featherweight title previously held by former champions Conor McGregor and Paddy Pimblett. After battling their way to the title shot in Cage Warriors’ featherweight tournament just months ago, it’s time for Lee and Trueman to meet in the biggest moment of their careers to date.

Elsewhere on the card, UFC vet and ex-CW champion Nicolas Dalby takes on Ireland’s Phil Mulpeter in the welterweight division, with both men fighting off the back of big finish wins earlier in the year.

Expect two striking masterclasses in Alex Lohoré vs Tim Barnett and Jai Herbert vs Joe McColgan, and a potential sleeper pick for fight of the night when Håkon Foss takes on Welshman Aaron Khalid.

Top UK prospect Rhys McKee makes his Cage Warriors debut against Jefferson George in the lightweight division, and it’s Wales vs Scotland when former bantamweight title challenger Josh Reed meets Scott Malone.

“This card is a historic night not only for the promotion but for the sport in Europe,” says Cage Warriors President Graham Boylan. “There’s fights lower down this card that could have made the main event on any other show – you won’t find a better display of European MMA than this.”

And that’s not all. Before the CW100 pro card, the Cage Warriors Academy Grand Prix finals will see Europe’s top amateur talent compete for a pro contract, after fighting their way through the quarter and semi finals throughout 2018. It’s all to fight for.

CW100 tickets are still available HERE. Doors at the Viola Arena open at 3PM. As well as a non-stop night of fight action, fans have the opportunity to meet UFC legend Dan Hardy, former CW champs and now Welsh UFC names Brett Johns and Jack Marshman, and CW Octagon Girl Edith Labelle at the CW100 Meet and Greet.

Andrea Scarpa: confident of outboxing Joe Hughes

“I’ve been training for this fight for two months now. I’m in the shape of my career and I’m feeling confident in my abilities. Having mental strength is vital if you want to defeat a tough customer like Joe Hughes.”

SCARPA ON HUGHES: I’LL MAKE HIM MISS AND MAKE HIM PAY

Andrea Scarpa is confident of outboxing Joe Hughes when the pair clash for the Vacant EBU European Super-Lightweight title at the Teatro Obi Hall in Florence on November 30, live on DAZN and Sky Sports.

Scarpa (23-4, 10 KO’s) is a former Italian Champion in two weight divisions; Super-Featherweight and Super-Lightweight. The Turin fighter outpointed Lyes Chaibi for the IBF Inter-Continental Super-Lightweight crown in his home city in 2015 before stopping John Wayne Hibbert to earn the WBC Silver 140lbs title at The O2 in 2016.

He surrendered that title to Londoner Ohara Davies later that year, losing out on all three of the judge’s scorecards. But ‘Sugar Ray’ believes his ring experience against British fighters will stand him in good stead when he meets former English Super-Lightweight Champion Hughes next week.

“I’ve watched a lot of Joe Hughes’ fights and he likes to be the aggressor,” said Scarpa. “He throws a lot of punches and piles on the pressure but this will play into my hands. I will make him miss with my fast movement and hit him on the counter.

“I’ve shared the ring with British fighters on two occasions and I know the style they bring to the ring. Joe put up a good fight in his last challenge for the European title against Anthony Yigit and that shows the level that he’s at. I’ll need to be at the top of my game to beat him.

“I’ve been training for this fight for two months now. I’m in the shape of my career and I’m feeling confident in my abilities. Having mental strength is vital if you want to defeat a tough customer like Joe Hughes.”

Scrapa’s clash with Hughes is part of a huge night of boxing in Florence.

Florence’s own Fabio ‘Stone Crusher’ Turchi (15-0) defends his WBC International Silver Cruiserweight title against Britain’s former Commonwealth Champion Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest (18-2) and Devis ‘Boom Boom’ Boschiero (46-5-2) takes on Brentwood’s former European Champion Martin J Ward (20-1-2) for the WBC International Silver Super-Featherweight title.

Super-Welterweight Orlando Fiordigiglio (29-2), undefeated Featherweight Carmine Tommasone (18-0), Welterweight prospect Mirko Natalizi (2-0) and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist John Docherty (1-0) all feature on the undercard.

Tickets are available from Ticketone.it and Boxofficetoscana.it
