Canelo and Jacobs grace Mexico City

Canelo and Jacobs grace Mexico City

Looking more like Wall Street bankers than tough hewn stripped down fighters, Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs showed mutual respect at TV Azteca in Mexico City, but each man said decisive victory would be theirs in Las Vegas, on May 4th…with Canelo promising a KO!

Golden Boy Promotions supremo Oscar De La Hoya summed it up as: “A great unification. I love it. This is a fifty/fifty fight.” And both already looked in fabulous shape. Daniel had seemingly borrowed John Travolta’s pristine white suit from Saturday night Fever, while Canelo was more conservatively attired in a charcoal gray suit.

At stake are Canelo’s WBC and Ring Magazine belts.  While Jacob’s IBF belt is on the table.  Canelo came to podium last, during the introductions.  There was mutual respect, but no hand shake between the two rivals.

Matchroom Promoter Eddie Hearn, who’s promising to buy a home I’m Mexico City soon…said: We want to thank Golden Boy and Canelo for accepting this huge challenge. DAZN are an amazing partner and we’re only just getting started.”

“Canelo has a tattoo on his arm saying no boxing no life. This demonstrates the passion for boxing in Mexico. Danny Jacobs is not only an amazing boxer, but an amazing man. After beating cancer hec was told by his doctors he would certainly not fight again. He stands before us today prepared to take part in the biggest fight of the year.”

Daniel Jacobs who thanked the Mexican people for a magnificent and hospitable welcome said: “my family is my biggest motivation. I love you guys. This fight means everything to me because of the caliber of fighter I face with Canelo. It’s the best possible fight you guys can see, come May 4th. We will give our all in that ring!”

Canelo thanked all of the Mexican and international media for their support and turning to Daniel, he also thanked him.

Canelo said: “For me it’s a great honor to represent Mexico. I’m training one hundred percent dedicating myself. I will have a difficult opponent in front of me, but I’m going for the KO to remain champion.”

World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman said: “It’s a very difficult fight, in which the level of competition is very high. Jacobs brings great motivation. He defeated cancer and he’s ready to go in and give it all inside the ring. Canelo is in the best moment and it’s just great to see champion vs champion in the ring.”

MONTE-CARLO PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

MONTE-CARLO PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Eddie Hearn:

“Thank you to everyone for making their way here to this wonderful venue. We are so lucky to be given the opportunity to promote boxing here in Monaco and without everybody at the Monte-Carlo SBM this wouldn’t be possible.

“We’re promoting over 50 shows a year Worldwide now and all kinds of different events. 90,000 at Wembley Stadium, last week we were in Kansas, next week we’re in Florence. This event is becoming a regular fixture on our international calendar. This is the third year running we’ve been here in Monaco. The shows keep on getting stronger and stronger, the fights get better and better. The demand continues to grow, and so does the international TV distribution, this show will be shown all around the World in all territories.

“The show on Saturday is fantastic, World title fights, fights for young prospects to get on the World scene, fighters battling for their careers, Heavyweight clashes and great stories.”

Denis Lebedev – Checkhov, Russia – 31-2, 23 KO’s – fighting Mike Wilson for the WBA Cruiserweight World title:

“I am happy boxing in Monte-Carlo and I am happy boxing with team Matchroom. I couldn’t understand what my opponent was saying but it sounds like he is a very humorous guy, a very fun guy. I am trying to live the same way, I am a fun guy as well. I’m really happy that he comes with an amazing attitude for Saturday’s clash.

“Thinking that I am in a different stage of my career when the best Denis Lebedev is already gone is a mistake, I’m really glad he’s got that type of thing in his head. I’ve had many long breaks in my career and I’ve always come back as a better fighter. I am coming back as a lion and I have huge plans for my career. I feel better than ever and I’m happy to show you what the real Denis Lebedev is all about. Please don’t blink.”

Mike Wilson – Oregon, USA – 19-0, 8 KO’s – fighting Denis Lebedev for the WBA Cruiserweight World title:

“It’s a real honour to be here, it’s a beautiful place. Thanks to Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing for having me. We’ve had a great camp and we’re ready to show the World what they’ve been missing, what we can do. I truly believe that this fight has come at the perfect time for me. Denis has been a great Champion in the past but I believe that I’m getting him at the right time. His best form is behind him. This is going to be like Rocky 4. I feel good about this, I really do. I’ve come here to give all of you guys a good show and hopefully we’ll be back here.

“This is a big step up for me but I fight life every day. This is easy, the hard work is behind me, training camp is behind us and now it’s time just to put it all together and fight. A flock of pelicans couldn’t even keep me away from this fight. We were leaving Salt Lake City and we had to get escorted in by fire trucks and all that. You have to fight through adversity to get the things you want in life and we want that WBA World title. If I had to I was going to go in there and land the plane myself! I’m just glad to be here.”

Alexander Ustinov – Paustovo, Russia – 34-2, 25 KO’s – fighting Michael Hunter for the WBA International Heavyweight title:

“While I am enjoying the atmosphere here in Monaco, I have only got one thought in my head. The chances can run out, and with this chance I have to take it. I need to be fighting for the World title very soon. I’ll prove on Saturday that I am a worthy competitor.”

“First of all I would like to thank Matchroom Boxing, DAZN and Sky Sports for having me. If you guys don’t know me, you’ll get to know me a little bit more come Saturday. I’m usually an action-packed, exciting fighter. I’m just ready to showcase my skills and burst onto the Heavyweight scene. Come Saturday you’ll see me perform and do my best.

“We stay away from what is strong and attack what is weak. I know my strengths and I know his strengths as well. It’s going to make for an action-packed fight because of the height difference. I’m very excited. I can feel it, I’m right there and this is another great opportunity for me to showcase who I’ve always been.”

“I’ve taken this guy very seriously. I’ve trained 12 hard weeks for this fight. I’ve had brilliant sparring, my preparation has been great. I feel like I’m improving all of the time. I’m looking to be explosive on Saturday night. I’m looking to go in there on Saturday night and impress and put out another note to all of the other Champions. Don’t blink.”

“I’ve come back to the form that I had when I was preparing to be the challenger against Hosea Burton. I’ve got that drive and hunger and I’ve reached that form in the gym. I’m confident and I respect Fanlong, he’s a very good fighter and he was a top class amateur, but I’ve put the work in and I’m very confident in my ability to go and get that title.”

RANKIN: I HAVE THE GAMEPLAN TO DETHRONE SHIELDS

Scot relishing her underdog status against World ruler in Kansas

Hannah Rankin believes her team have devised the right gameplan to beat Claressa Shields and claim the WBA, IBF and vacant WBC World Middleweight titles on Saturday night at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, KS, live on DAZN.

Tickets are on sale now from ticketmaster.com starting at just $25! Click here to book!

Rankin meets Michigan ace Shields in her second World title fight, coming into the clash on the back of moving up two weights to take WBA Super-Middleweight champion Alicia Napoleon the distance in New York in August.

The 28 year old feels strong at 160lbs as she prepares to face the two-time Team USA Olympic gold medal star, and as a proud Scot, she’s relishing her underdog status.

“I’m so excited about the fight,” said Rankin. “She’s one of the top names in the game and that’s why I’ve taken the challenge at the very top level. I’m really looking forward to the fight, we’ve both got aggressive styles and I think it’s going to be great for TV. I hope she brings her A-game as I’m going to bring mine.

“I’m a massive underdog and I’m not going to say it any other way, but I can’t wait to get in there and showcase what I can do. We’ve got a gameplan to execute and I am confident that if I stick to it, I’ll hear ‘and the new’.

“Being a boxer is a very Scottish thing to do – we’re always the underdog and we love to prove people wrong. I’ve got a big heart and I am a fighter, I always have been. You are always learning in the gym and in every fight and I thrive on that, it’s what attracts me to the sport.

“I’m not a trash talker, I’ve worked on my things in camp so she better be ready for me on Saturday as I’m ready to bring it. Alicia was my first ten round title fight and I stepped up two weights for that. I’m outside my comfort zone again but I learnt a lot in my last fight and I’m going to bring all that out on Saturday.

“Women’s boxing is taking massive steps forward and being live on DAZN on a Matchroom Boxing show is another big step in the right direction. Katie Taylor is leading the way for us too and things are starting to change for the positive and slowly we’re getting there, getting the props and the airtime to build up our fanbases.”

Shield’s clash with Rankin is part of a huge night of action in Kansas in association with KO Night Boxing with a host of stars and local talents in action.

Brooklyn’s Heavyweight star Jarrell Miller meets fellow unbeaten big-hitter Bogdan Dinu in a crunch clash at the top level of the division.

Middleweight contenders Luis Arias and Gabriel Rosado clash in what promises to be a real war as the pair look to gatecrash the lucrative top table, and there’s an all-Mexican clash and a homecoming for Brandon Rios against Ramon Alvarez, brother of ‘Canelo’, as both men look to make a splash at Welterweight.

Team USA 2016 Olympic bronze medal man Nico Hernandez has raced to 5-0 (4 KOs) – the Wichita talent fights for the third time in the Kansas Star Casino and Arena since debuting there in March 2017, unbeaten Wichita Super-Middleweight and police officer Manny Thompson looks to improve his 7-0 record and Las Vegas’ Jeremy Nichols meets Wichita’s Jeremiah Page at Middleweight.

Unbeaten Light-Heavyweight contender Anthony Sims Jr. and Brooklyn’s exciting newcomer to the Middleweight scene Nikita Ababiy, fresh from a first round KO on debut in Chicago in October, are also in action.

LUIS ARIAS: I’LL PROVE I’M NO BITCH!

‘Cuba’ wants brutal war with Rosado to take ‘bad taste’ from fan’s mouths

Luis Arias wants to make Gabriel Rosado eat his words and prove he’s not a ‘bitch’ by beating him in a Middleweight war at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, KS on Saturday night, live on DAZN.

Tickets are on sale now from ticketmaster.com starting at just $25! Click here to book!

Arias is back in action for the first time since losing out on points to Daniel Jacobs in New York last November, siting a huge blister as the cause of him having to adopt a defensive approach against the now-IBF World champion who handed him a first career loss in his 19th fight.

When ‘Cuba’ and Rosado met in a press conference to announce the fight in the Big Apple, the pair exchanged harsh words on their respective career – with Rosado’s ‘bitch’ jibe a counter to Arias pointing out the number of losses and KO’s the Philadelphian has suffered – and a $10,000 wager being laid on the bout.

The pair will talk for one final time at today’s press conference in Wichita and Arias expects to hear more of the same, but he’s ready to prove that doubters wrong and show the Jacobs loss has made him a stronger fighter.

“That’s his only stab at me to say that I ran like a bitch against Jacobs,” said Arias. “But I didn’t get KO’d. He’s had two feet against plenty of guys and got KO’d, beaten up badly. I had a little scratch on my face after the Jacobs fight.

“I was physically and mentally ready for the fight and I believed I would win. I made a rookie mistake with my footwear and I learned a lesson the hard way.

“The fact that I was able to get out of that fight against a 190lbs guy with just a scratch, it shows I can compete with the best and it’s time to get my things in order and really prove that I can hang with all the top guys.

“I am putting pressure on myself to erase the bad taste I left last time, that’s the task this weekend. I need to prove that I am not a little bitch. It may have looked like I ran like one but I am not – I had to do that to survive and make the 12 rounds. I am a true warrior and I love the wars, I love to bang it out – I just wasn’t physically capable of doing that in the Jacobs fight.

“I left a sour taste in the mouths of the fans in the Jacobs fight but I am a better and more mature fighter now, I’ve learned from it and I think that this is the fight that changes my career. I’m a warrior, he’s a warrior – it’s going to be bloody but the blood is not going to be mine.

“He’s got a lot of miles on the clock but he’s durable. If I’d had this fight before the Jacobs fight then I would have been readier for that stage, but it didn’t work out that way. I get a fresh chance and a do-over now, and I’m going to do this right this time.”

Arias’ clash with Rosado is part of a huge night of action in Kansas in association with KO Night Boxing with a host of stars and local talents in action.

Brooklyn’s Heavyweight star Jarrell Miller meets fellow unbeaten big-hitter Bogdan Dinu in a crunch clash at the top level of the division, while chief-support provided by the brilliant two-weight World ruler Claressa Shields who looks to add the WBC Middleweight strap to her WBA and IBF crowns against tough Scottish challenger Hannah Rankin.

There’s an all-Mexican clash and a homecoming for Brandon Rios against Ramon Alvarez, brother of ‘Canelo’’, as both men look to make a splash at Welterweight.

Team USA 2016 Olympic bronze medal man Nico Hernandez has raced to 5-0 (4KOs) – the Wichita talent fights for the third time in the Kansas Star Casino and Arena since debuting there in March 2017, unbeaten Wichita Super-Middleweight and police officer Manny Thompson looks to improve his 7-0 record and Las Vegas’ Jeremy Nichols meets Wichita’s Jeremiah Page at Middleweight.

Unbeaten contender Anthony Sims Jr. makes a move to Super-Middleweight and Brooklyn’s exciting newcomer to the Middleweight scene Nikita Ababiy, fresh from a first round KO on debut in Chicago earlier in the month, is also in action.

ANTHONY BELLEW CALLS TIME ON BOXING

Brave Bellew calls time on boxing

Tony Bellew bowed out of boxing at the weekend a loser in the ring but a winner in life.

Bellew was knocked out in eight rounds by Oleksandr Usyk in his bid to dethrone the undisputed undefeated cruiserweight king at the Manchester Arena on Saturday night.

The proud Liverpudlian reversed a decision to retire and took on Usyk after being called out by the Ukrainian following his historic win in the World Boxing Super Series final in Moscow in the summer.

“It’s definitely over now, you won’t see me in a boxing ring again,” said Bellew during an emotional press conference. “I just want a normal life, I don’t want this pressure.

“I only created the name Tony Bellew to make my dad proud. I’ve never been Tony Bellew, I’ve always been Anthony. Everyone who truly knows me calls me Anthony. Tony Bellew died on Saturday, Anthony Bellew comes back alive. I want reality back.

“I sit here as a loser but I have won in life. When I was expelled from school I had nothing and nowhere to go. Me and my three boys are multi-millionaires and I have earned every single penny by punching people in the face.”

Bellew, a former WBC cruiserweight champion, dropped back down to the 200lbs division to face the champion he had branded a “monster” in a final throw of the dice following thrilling back-to-back heavyweight wins over David Haye.

Underdog “Bomber” boxed well and was ahead on the scorecards of two out of three judges until a devastating left hook ended any hopes of becoming the first Briton to hold all four world titles in any division.

“I just tried to take that one final step and, you know what, I wasn’t good enough but I’ll be able to live with that forever,” insisted Bellew.

“If I wouldn’t have taken this fight, that would have killed me because I would have always been ‘was I good enough?’ The fact of the matter is I just wasn’t, he’s better than me.”

“If I’m being honest I got tired for the first time in my entire career. I don’t know why or how it happened but I just got tired. He’s brilliant, I have no bad words to say about Oleksandr, I only wish him well.

“I went out against the best cruiserweight and he can lay claim to being the greatest cruiserweight of all time.

“No excuses, I gave it everything I had, I couldn’t have prepared any better. My career is over. I’ve been doing this for 20 years.”
